MONDAY MORNING HISTORY CLASS IN NOW IN SESSION! 9-14
Today dear students, we look at a fairly rare 1961 Chevrolet supplied brochure, likely produced in late winter/early spring of 1961. First off, the format- the eight 11 x 6 pages are printed on a single sheet of paper that folds out to make a wide 24 x11 double sided brouchure.
Secondly the content- 1961 advertising had begun touting the 61’s as The Complete Line of Thrift Cars since the wagons and Greenbriers had joined the lineup, and highlighted improved ecomnomy with the manaul choke and direct air heater.
But this brochure spotlighted Corvairs’ wins in the Canadian Winter Rally, the Frostbite 500 Rally, and covers the Colorado Corvair Club’s Winter Rally on frozen Rainbow Falls Lake (FWIW, your teacher has had plenty of seat time doing the same thing on frozen lakes in southern Wisconsin in the 80’s & 90’s.
The Greenbriers are also featured as being selected to transport the bobsled & tobogganing teams teams at the world championship competetion held at Lake Placid New York ( which was the location of Corsa’s National Convention in 1997) .
All these accomplishments were possible because of Corvair’s rear engine traction design.
The words Thrift and Econmy weren’t mentioned once….indeed, the marketing for the Corvair was changing as the Monza in particular had created a new niche market in the field of American compact cars…..
