From Larry Claypool and the Corvair Preservation Foundation (CPF):
MONDAY MORNING HISTORY CLASS NOW IN SESSION! 5/18 Chevrolet introduces a new LH remote control outside rear view mirror for any 1964 Corvair car. Eventaully, 5,357 cars would be so ordered , the vast majority being Monzas and Spyders (as expeced). By May of 64 however, a number of those began having issues with binding or corroding control cables, limiting the amount of adjutment possible. A “Control Unit’ consisting of a new knob & cables was the recommended fix .
While your freinedly local dealer won’t be able to sell you the control unit anymore, the instructions for removal/replacement may come in handy if you still have this fairly rare option on your car!
Another tidbit of Corvair History from the CPF.
