The body work continues but at a slower pace. My brother is doing the skilled bodywork, hammering and filling and I’m doing the grunt work, as in sanding, sanding and sanding. My wife calls him “Bondo Don”.
“Bondo” has been traveling a lot lately so I’m keeping busy doing stuff like straightening out chrome and cleaning the engine compartment. A lot of dirt filled the lower rocker panels. Fortunately the cleaning only revealed some surface rust. While waiting on the body work I’ve decided to start on the drivetrain.
The engine is well past due for a rebuild which is now underway. Mel Raven is doing the rebuild and he has kindly agreed to let me help.
Mel makes em go fast and that’s what we’re gonna do. My goals are:
- Add more ponies
- Improve reliability
- Maintain good drivability
And most importantly I hope to have everything done in time for The Old Car Picnic in October.
I’m really enjoying getting my hands dirty at the shop. Mel is so well known in the Corvair community there’s no shortage of folks coming by to say hi and talk Vairs which makes things, and I’m gonna use the “F” word here, FUN. Visiting Saturday was SFBA CORSA member Scott Lyon who took the picture of Mel and I and a bunch more. It was great to meet Scott in person and have look at his car. It’s very nice. Hood up he shared some useful tips engine tips.
