I got elbows deep in a project yesterday and didn’t have a post scheduled this morning!
So, I’ll do a little “tech tip” while I’m waiting for the paint to dry.
Finding the “right” black paint for our engine shrouds can be tricky. You find the right finish but it isn’t rated for high heat and starts to crack after the first few drives.
You find engine paint only for it to be “too glossy” or “too flat”. Brothers and sisters, you are singing my song!
Now some of you go the powder coat route and nothing wrong with that. For those of you who want to save a few bucks or not faint when that powder coat gets a ding, I’ll share the following tip.
For background, I’ve tried all of the finishes from all of the brands and have a shelf to prove it.
The best one I have found is the Rust-Oleum high heat ultra black rattle can, part number 241169.

This stuff lays flat and looks great with a few coats. Just clean(!) and hang the part and start shooting.

Here is a photo of the 140 on my other 64 assembled with all shrouds painted with the BBQ black

Will it pass the concourse? Unknown.
Will it look good for your local cars n coffee or get together, I think yes!
Have a painting tip? Want to let us have it for not having an email in your inbox at 7am this morning?
